Ask The Expert: Furnace Fan Runs Non Stop!

QUESTION:
“My furnace sounds like it is running non-stop yet my thermostat is turned off. Air conditioner works fine when it is on. Any advice to help make the motor stop?”

– Wade

ANSWER:
If the fan switch on your thermostat is in auto or off and the fan continues to run, there are a couple things that could be the problem:

  1. The fan relay maybe stuck
  2. There may be a short in the low voltage wiring

Depending on your make and model, the fan relay could be built into to a circuit board or it could be a separate relay. Sometimes just turning the power off and removing the doors is enough to bump it loose.

If it continues to run after you replace the doors and turn the power back on, you may need a service tech to find the problem. Contact us for a service call and we can take care of it for you.
