What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner that can provide both heating and cooling. During cold months, heat pumps extract thermal energy from the air (or ground), compress it, and distribute it to your home to provide comfortable warm air. During the summer, the process is simply reversed, and the heat pump replaces the stuffy hot air inside your home with cozy cool air.

Some of the different types of heat pumps include:

Air Source Electric Heat Pumps: Most common type of heat pump in our area – up to 300% efficiency. Heat is extracted from outdoor air and then distributed in the home through ducts in central air system. Process reversed for cooling during the summer. Unit sits outside home.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (Geothermal):  Up to 500% efficiency, the most efficient way to heat and cool a home. Heat is extracted from the earth and distributed to the home through ducts in a central air system. Process reversed for cooling during the summer. Can be configured for free hot water.  Unit is ultra quiet, and sits indoors, meaning longer life cycle and fewer repairs needed. Extremely environmentally friendly.

Ductless Mini Splits: Heating & cooling solution for one or multiple rooms. Requires no duct work. Heat is extracted from outdoor air. Unit sits outside home. Heat and cool only the rooms you need to.

Below are the recommended heat pumps that R&R Heating & Air Conditioning suggests for your home or office. If you already own a heat pump and are in need of repair / maintenance, visit our Heat Pump Repair page.

Carrier - Heat Pumps

Carrier Infinity 20 - Heat Pump

The Infinity series heat pump with Greenspeed intelligence is the first of its kind. No other ducted, air source heat pump can beat its 13 HSPFrating for heating efficiency. It’s a winner too, when it comes to cooling. But perhaps the biggest story is what it can do for your home comfort.

Greenspeed intelligence is created by pairing adaptable-speed technology with our Infinity control’s intelligence. The unique, variable-speed compressor of this unit, when managed by the Infinity control as part of a complete Infinity system, allows it to literally adapt its output to the needs of the home. With infinite adjustments between 40 and 100% capacity, it gives the home only the amount of cooling or heating necessary.

This allows the system to operate longer at steadier, lower capacities, which ensures incredible energy efficiency and quiet operation with tighter temperature control than standard systems.

  • High energy efficiency up to 20.5 SEER and up to 13.0 HSPF
  • Superior comfort and humidity control with Greenspeed® intelligence
  • Variable-speed operation provides even temperatures throughout the home
  • Non-ozone depleting Puron® refrigerant
  • Quiet operation with Carrier’s Silencer System II™ feature
  • Sound levels as low as 58 decibels
  • Protected by Carrier’s WeatherArmor Ultra™ coil guard

Carrier Infinity 18VS - Heat Pump

The Infinity 18VS heat pump is different in a lot of ways. It offers variable-speed compression that can step down in 5 stages to as low as 25% of its capacity. That’s huge from a comfort perspective. The ability to run in lower speeds most of the time makes it quieter and more adept at removing humidity in the summer. It’s also significantly better than a 2-stage unit at keeping temperatures even. Plus, those lower speeds are the sweet spot for the unit’s best efficiency levels and for getting the most benefit out of other systems you might have like an air purifier because of more constant air flow through the system.

And, it’s seldom you can upgrade your system a component at a time. Most often, the leap to higher efficiency and better comfort via a communicating system for that home you love, can mean you have to deal with the cost of a whole system even though only your outdoor cooling unit has called it quits. The Infinity 18VS could change that for you.

  • High energy efficiency up to 18.0 SEER and up to 11.0 HSPF
  • Variable-speed operation provides even temperatures throughout the home
  • Non-ozone depleting Puron® refrigerant
  • Quiet operation with Carrier’s Silencer System II™ feature
  • Sound levels as low as 55 decibels
  • Superior humidity control
  • Protected by Carrier’s WeatherArmor Ultra™ coil guard
